Recorded at Jack White’s Third Man Records studio and to be released on Nonesuch, Sleep with One Eye Open is my most anticipated bluegrass record of the year. There’s one main reason for that. The name: Chris Thile. The legendary mandolin player, formerly of Nickel Creek, and currently of the Brothers Punch is an astounding musician (I’ve seen him with NC and PB and both shows were stellar), and now he’s teamed up with guitarist Michael Daves for a fascinating sideproject.
The album contains sixteen bluegrass covers from the likes of The Monroe Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and Flatt & Scruggs. The album comes out on Monday, May 10th. TMR Blue Series 7″ Single ‘Man in the Middle’/'Blue Night’ is out now.
Thile sounds really excited when talking about the record.: “Mandolin and guitar and two male voices—it’s such a good sound. It was important for us was to get that brother duet thing, but with this Lower East Side punk energy. One of the most enjoyable things about this experience was to underline the slightly delinquent side of bluegrass. It was awesome knowing that Jack White, whose music I love, was liable to poke his head in at any time.”
